hidell brooks is delighted to include paintings by joshua meyer and karen ann myers in our group exhibtion go figure opening friday january 9th from 6-8 pm. we are enamoured with both artists and their different appoaches to the human figure. joshua meyer's loosely gestured brushwork is in perfect opposition to karen ann myer's tighly rendered paintings with no evidence of her brush on the canvas. both painters convey a strong emotion from their figure paintings that captivates the viewer.
joshua meyer was born in texas and studied art at yale university and the bezalel academy in jerusalem. meyer has been recognized over the past few years with a pollock-krasner fellowship, a massachusetts cultural council painting fellowship, and the sustainable arts foundation award. his paintings border the line between abstract and realism mixing the two beautifully.
karen ann myers received her mfa in painting from boston university and her bfa in studio art from michigan state university. she is currently serving as the assistant director at the halsey institute of contemporary art and an adjunct professor of art at the college of charleston. last year karen had a solo exhibition of her paintings at the greenvile museum of art. her emotionally charged paintings are highly detailed with her figures most always in bed and are meant to spark a dialogue on sexuality and identity.
i am investigating the psychological complexity of women through intimate observations in the bedroom. the work is inspired by the cult of beauty in contemporary mass media. intricately painted, decorative interiors are invented to titillate the viewer.
