October 31, 2012 SLANT

in the front gallery we have the amazing paintings by scott duce.  they vary in scale from very small to large with landscapes and figurative work.  in his landscape paintings scott expertly meshes the traditional beauty of a landscape painting with an abstract background.  accomplishing the hard to achieve combination of his paintings both being abstract and a traditional landscape.  happily appealing to the many clients in relationships were one partner does not like a landscape or vice versa!

scott duce lives and works in new york city.  he received his mfa from boston university.  duce's work is included in many corporate, museum, and private collections. notable collections include random house, general electric, ibm, pfizer, inc., capital holding corporation, mcGraw-hill corporation, petroplus holdings, switzerland, seagrams-montreal, canada, and the u.s. embassy in stockholm, sweden. among his awards and honors he received a national endowment for the arts/secca artist grant.

the in public series are small figurative paintings of people scott duce snapped a photo of from his studio window in nyc.  actual people going about their day.  scott captures their every day activity and is able to convey with minimal details the personality of the individual.  they are quite compeling and beautiful.

charles walker lives and paints in texas.  he received his ba from wake forest university and his mfa from the university of georgia.  his abstact paintings are a study in continuallity.  his paintings are abstract but there is no denying the connection to the landscape with their bands of color.  his paintings look amazing in all interiors and they especially pop in more tradional interiors giving rooms a punch of color.

people crave narrative. i deny people that desire in my paintings. i try to make objects that operate in a space without story. i am just like you – i desire information, but i acknowledge a world that exists without words. in art there is a space for intuition and improvisation without any explanation as to how you arrive at any certain conclusion. paintings do not provide any answers and they are also pretty lousy at forming questions. paintings simply exist in thin slivers of space and time and they sit there looking at you as much as you look at them.

all new paintings by scott duce + charles walker are up on our website if you cannot get by in person to see the show.  call us if you have any further questions or stop by tomorrow night for a cocktail with the artists!
