our peggy + mint museum

April 25, 2014 Hidell Brooks

big news around hidell brooks gallery.  my sweet daughter and rebecca's goddaughter peggy thomas had her first museum show this week!  we were on gallery business in new york when peggy told me over the phone her artwork a portrait of me no less had been picked to be in an exhibition of student art at the mint museum uptown.  the news touched my heart.

when the actual invitation arrived in the mail for the opening night there was lots of excitement. gallery openings to my child are usually a sign she will not see her mother or bubba (rebecca) for many days but this opening took on new meaning for her.  peggy told me she knew why her artwork had been selected for the exhibition.  she said she looked around the art room and all the children were doing the same thing and she remembered what i always tell her it is ok to be different.  different is good.  a big thank you to charlotte latin school and her art teacher for their affirmation to my child.

nothing is better than viewing the unfiltered imagination of a child.  it is on full display on the second floor of the uptown mint museum through mid may.  a show not to be missed.  rebecca asked peggy while we were having pizza at pure pizza in 7th street station after what was her favorite part of the night.  her eyes got really big and a smile drew across her face and she said the cookies!  like every good opening there were refreshments.

per peggy's request marvelous mom inspired by gustav klimt will be permanently installed over the water fountain at the gallery in the back storeroom.  a place of honor in her eyes.  water fountains and cookies what a wonderful life.
