selena beaudry + page davis

March 2, 2016 Hidell Brooks

we are so pumped to open two amazing solo exhibitions friday night for selena beaudry just paper?! and page davis talk to me.  planning a solo exhibition for an artist takes a lot of preparation.  we schedule out the show 2 years in advance, work through ideas for the exhibition with the artist, the artist makes the work + photographs, design the invitation and finally framing and installation.  to finally see the exhibition hanging on the walls is very gratifying to us and especially the artist.

just paper?!

for this show i decided to exhibit work just made out of paper.  it was a way to open up my studio practice to the viewer, a breakdown of the way i think.  works on paper are often marginalized. for me it is an essential part of my art making process.  i also like the idea of taking things that are often discarded and making something from them.  i use paper in a number of ways, to create drawings, paintings on paper, piles, and collages.  all of the work is equally important.  it all informs each other and sparks new ideas and discoveries for me to follow.

talk to me

painting is my way of telling a story and of communicating a feeling, or an emotion.  it is a way to recall memories while at the same time create new ones.  when i work i am continuing a dialogue that remains open ended from year to year.  for me it is like having a conversation with an old friend.  i don't have to explain everything but pick up where i left off.  they are at times fresh and light and at times more layered and laborious.  i have an intimate connection with each painting and liken the experience of making it to a moment in time that cannot be replaced or recreated.  "talk to me" is a body of work that reflects my heightened awareness of communication that feels real.  in a day where the majority of our time is spent talking via emoticons, text messages, and emails and the meanings and emotions are muddled i find more joy than ever in the feeling of being fully present and connected when i paint.
