july exhibitions...sally king benedict + scott duce

July 19, 2023 Hidell Brooks

summer is in full swing and hidell brooks is super excited to open our july solo exhibitions for sally king benedict + scott duce. new paintings by both artists will be on view through august. we have the upmost regard for painters who are committed to their time in the studio to explore and expand their oeuvre. sally and scott have delved deep into their subject matters and the resulting work is clear + strong in their unique style. images of the work speak for themselves and mesmerize at every turn.

sally king benedict

sally king benedict received her ba in studio art from the college of charleston. sally’s mixed media works range from her classic faces to pure abstraction. she is inspired by her travels and all aspects of her life spill into her work. the energy she creates through her brushstrokes and palette is truly unique. her visual voice is so strong and stays in the viewer’s mind long after seeing the work. sally’s work has been featured in elle decor, house beautiful, domino and southern living. benedict's exuberant style is unmistakable and showcases her expert use of color and dynamic brushwork.  sally lives and works in ketchum, idaho.

scott duce

scott duce received his mfa from boston university and his bfa from the university of utah.  his paintings reveal a fine-tuned understanding of archetypical landscape reinterpreted in an uncompromisingly individual way. dedicated to the universal rather than the particular, duce’s keen insight reinvigorates the tradition of landscape painting.  among his awards and honors he has received a national endowment for the arts/secca artist grant.  scott duce is on the faculty at sarah lawrence college.  he paints in his studio in new york city where he captures a lot of his subjects from the in marker series by photographing people going about their every day activities.

an on going series each 12 x 12 inches in oil on panel.  the paintings are meant to be seen in groups.  the series is based upon observation of specific and unique individuals as seen on the streets and parks through out the city.  the series isolates individual figures within a color field to explore the visual impact of a subtle moment within the complexity of our visual reality.  by further reorganizing and deconstructing the images, placing them in a unified grid, reestablish a  visual and emotional intricacy, the series suggests subtle and complex nature of isolated human actions in publics spaces.  many of the individuals were seen directly from the studio window in new york.

over the past two years duce has spent several months in chiapas, mexico where he was inspired by the unique range of vintage vw bugs and their visual relationship to the streets and organic architecture of the mountainous villages.  duce created the paintings in small format to achieve an intimate jewel-like quality that expresses the color and atmosphere typical of the chiapas region.  the paintings range in size from 8 x 8 inches to 20 x 20 inches and are all painted in oil on wood panel.  this series has expanded and scott is now working in larger formats and exploring new compositions including bringing the figure into the landscape.
