hidell brooks is so excited to have paintings by john folsom back in the gallery.  we showed his mixed media paintings over a decade ago and recently renewed our crush on his work after viewing the billboard atlantic series from a few years ago.  he kindly agreed to do a few paintings for the gallery and his work will be included in our group exhibition made in the south scheduled for summer 2016.  his process to create his mixed media on wood paintings is multi-tiered and complex.  he travels and documents the landscape with his digital camera and munipulates the image using computer software.  then the image is broken into a grid and each sheet is printed individually. the image is then assembled like a immense jigsaw puzzle and attached to the wooden panel.  folsom then paints on the surface of the photographic paper using oils and seals the entire image with a layer of encaustic.

john folsom was born and raised in paducah, kentucky and now resides in georgia. he received his bachelor of fine arts in cinema and photography from southern illinois university.  his practice demonstrates the narrative potential of images through the intersection of painting and photography.  folsom’s photographic paintings have been widely exhibited for the past 20 years and can be found in many collections worldwide.

currently paintings by john folsom are included in a group exhibition the new landscape at the mobile museum of art up through october 11, 2015.  the video in the studio:john folsom was made in tandem with the show.

the landscape has been a subject matter for painting since the beginning of time, and it continues to inspire artists today. front & center at the mobile museum of art will showcase a few of the talented regional artists that represent both the beauty and complexity of the world around us.
