hidell brooks is so excited to head down to columbia to check out the new exhibition building a universe currently on view at the south carolina state museum. the museum recently underwent a new expansion and this show focuses on a specific theme that is connected to the musem's capital project. the artists exhibited were selected because of the quality of their work, and how it connects to the idea of space in some way. virginia scotchie created a site specific art installation for the exhibition.
building a universe features creations by artists whose work deals with space and the universe, either directly or conceptually, according to chief curator of art paul matheny.
the exhibition includes artwork from 15 south carolina artists, many of whom created pieces specifically for this exhibit. the works represent a wide variety of media, including installation art, painting, printmaking, collage, sculpture and mixed media work.
